July Update: Macksville - Scotts Head Active Transport
Safe Active Transport Connection Scotts Head to Macksville
For our Active Transport project to proceed it is essential to have the Nambucca Valley Council as
our principal partner. We have been active in developing this partnership. The Council is now
developing an Active Transport Strategy for the valley and our proposal will be considered in this
context. It is now up to us to promote the many benefits of the Scotts Head / Macksville active
transport connection.
On 16th April 2025, Nambucca Valley councillors voted at the Council meeting, to
“...consider plans for a bicycle and pedestrian connection between Scotts Head and
Macksville in a future Active Transport Strategy for the region”. NOA 9/5/25.
The Active Transport Strategy will complement the Council’s existing Community Strategic Plan
2035, their Delivery Plan 2025 -2029 and their Operational Plan 2025 - 2026. A key focus of these
documents is on enhancing infrastructure to support healthy, active lifestyles through connected
footpaths, cycleways, parks, playgrounds, and sports grounds. In doing this Council “.... also needs
to listen to youth and respond to what they need.”
Of course Council has limited resources so State and Federal grants will need to be sourced. We
will be active in both promoting our project and supporting the Council locate funding
opportunities. It won’t be fast or easy, it will take time and advocacy …. AND all of this can
happen.
From the Nambucca Valley Council’s Community Strategic Plan:
Nambucca Valley Council is committed to being forward-thinking and transparent, acting where
possible and advocating where necessary. Councils must listen to, engage with, and respond to
communities while working closely with other governments, businesses, and not-for-profits. Good
governance and clear, honest leadership are essential.
The Nambucca Valley Council will continue to involve young people in shaping the region’s future.
By addressing their concerns—such as the need for safer, more accessible,
non-motorised transport options—Council can create lasting change.
Improvements like more footpaths and cycleways will support healthier, more
active lifestyles and benefit everyone, including youth, older residents, and
people with disabilities. Supporting young people through events, services, and inclusive
spaces will help them feel valued and connected. Council is committed to forming strong
partnerships across sectors to enhance wellbeing and social connection. Where necessary they
will seek additional funding through grants and developer contributions to invest in infrastructure
that supports a vibrant, active, and inclusive community.
